The verandah isn’t often at the top of a decorating list, but it can be a great place to relax and enjoy your garden. It’s essential to the home in the hot Australian summer, as it provides shade and allows you to take advantage of any cool breezes, but just because the weather is cooling down now doesn’t mean you can’t use it. Here’s how to turn your verandah into a stylish yet functional space.
SMART SEATING
Whether you have a traditional home with a classic bullnose verandah, or a casual, beachside home with a covered timber deck, it’s important to choose furniture, accessories and plants that suit your personal style. There should always be plenty of seating – sling chairs and wide benches are a great choice. Furniture needs to be comfortable and durable, and wrought-iron and timber pieces such as those made from teak are perfect, as they’re long wearing and good-looking.
Limited on space? Invest in a pair of chairs and a small round table so you can sit quietly on the verandah with a coff ee and read the paper in the morning, or enjoy a glass of wine in the evening. If you have a larger space, it’s worth thinking about an outdoor table setting and chairs so you can entertain family and friends in style and comfort. A hammock or swing chair is also a fabulous idea if you love to unwind with a book and a cup of tea.
LIGHT IT UP
For a coordinated look, choose a colour scheme and reflect it in the cushions, seat covers and other soft furnishings. These should be waterproof and have a removable cover that can be washed easily and stored away in damp weather.
To make the space feel cosier in winter, add an elegant outdoor rug or a plush outdoor beanbag.
When it comes to flooring, there are plenty of options available that will give your verandah a sophisticated look. While timber floorboards are the traditional choice, tiles are also a great alternative, as they’re easy
to clean and maintain.
Lighting is another important element – you can connect electricity to the verandah or install extension cords that can be hidden by plants and furniture. Th is means you could have ceiling fan lights to keep the verandah cool and provide lighting at night, or just string up some fairy lights for a more decorative eff ect. You could also opt for lamps and lanterns, or, to create a romantic atmosphere for dinners and parties, simply light some candles.
Tip: Hide the barbecue in a corner of the verandah when not in use, and use a cover to protect it from rain and sun.
