We hear global warming mentioned every day on the news and we’ve also experienced its effects through the extreme weather conditions of late. Interior designer Clare Palisi thinks our environment is suffering badly and believes we can make a difference. Here are some of her ideas for helping the planet through better choices.

THINK BEFORE YOU BUY
Firstly, ask yourself if you really need it. Secondly, think about what it’s made of and where it comes from. If it’s from overseas, how far has it travelled to get to Australia? Consider how much energy all that transportation has consumed. Buying locally made products not only means less energy is burned, it also means our economy is supported.

BUY SECOND HAND
Previously owned goods are hugely popular and will continue to be so. It’s often cheaper to buy second hand, and a home with many one-off pieces rather than a range of mass-produced commercial products will have more of an individual appeal. For some great bargains try eBay, charity shops or weekend markets.

BE CREATIVE
Furniture can be given a new lease on life in so many diff erent ways, and the process is far more satisfying to the soul. Revamp pieces you already have by painting them or changing the upholstery - you could even have them professionally restored. The great bonus is that you’ll be the proud owner of a unique designer piece.

BUY ECO-FRIENDLY PRODUCTS
There’s a new market emerging with lots of eco-friendly products, and some are completely fascinating and innovative. For example:
• Many dinnerware products, such as plates, bowls and utensils, are now available in bamboo. This woody grass is fast growing and uses considerably less water than timber.
• Plates, bowls and cups made from 100 per cent sugar are a biodegradable option for your next picnic or party.
• Towels made from 100 per cent sustainable beechwood fibres with non-toxic and colour-fast dyes are a good alternative to cotton, which creates a huge toll on the environment through its demand for water and pesticides. Best of all though, beechwood-fibre towels apparently feel like cashmere!
• Solar-powered products have been around for a while now, and they’re especially popular in garden lighting. Check out some fantastic Oriental-style lanterns from www.firebox.com
