Growing up in a family with more creativity than money, Margaret’s parents embarrassed her by decorating their home with second-hand furniture and castoffs they lovingly painted, varnished and restored. Today, she thinks they were incredibly resourceful and talented and is happy to report that some of that resourcefulness spark has rubbed off on her. After a decade of editing home magazines such as Our House and Country Home Ideas, Margaret has seen tonnes of houses and when it comes to home decorating, she is keen to share what she thinks works and what doesn’t.

Kitchen Craze

I’ve been thinking a lot about cooking and kitchens, and how we use them. How quickly things change. It seems like only a few years ago that pundits were predicting the demise of kitchens. With our busy, modern lifestyles, we were led to believe that most of us were dining out or buying prepared food to eat at home. That, I think, was before the popularity of such lifestyle television shows as MasterChef and the many other celebrity chef programs that seem to thrive on pay TV.

Contrary to popular belief, it seems many of us do like cooking and would love to have the nicest-possible kitchen in our home. In fact, these multipurpose spaces are so sought after that many homes have two of them – one inside and one outside. There is even a host of amazing new cookbooks now on the market – I have never seen so many released at once, so Australians must be doing more than just watching cooking on television.

My final thought on cookbooks is a bit of advice I wish I had followed before my beloved grandmother died. Before it’s too late, start your own cookbook. Fill up a notebook or scrapbook with your favourite recipes and also collect ones from other family members – aunties, uncles, siblings, parents and grandparents.
