The peak Australian electrical industry body has warned consumers to be careful when buying Christmas lights manufactured overseas as they may not meet Australian standards.
“It’s always a concern at this time of the year when Christmas lights and other electrical items appear in stores and on the internet as many do not comply with Australian standards,” said National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA) spokesman Dominic Feenan.
“NECA recommends that consumers only buy electrical products from reputable stores and if buying online check for the compliance mark or an approval number.”
When installing Christmas lights make sure there are no overheard power lines or exposed wiring near where you are working and never use indoor lights outside.
If you're concerned about electrical dangers in their home you should contact a licensed electrician to have the problem fixed. Visit www.neca.asn.au and click on the Find an Electrician button to find a licensed electrician in your area.
