Growing up in a family with more creativity than money, Margaret’s parents embarrassed her by decorating their home with second-hand furniture and castoffs they lovingly painted, varnished and restored. Today, she thinks they were incredibly resourceful and talented and is happy to report that some of that resourcefulness spark has rubbed off on her. After a decade of editing home magazines such as Our House and Country Home Ideas, Margaret has seen tonnes of houses and when it comes to home decorating, she is keen to share what she thinks works and what doesn’t.

Paris With Love

I must admit to having a love affair with Paris. I like it for all the obvious reasons – the history that literally slaps you in the face at every turn, the architecture and design of the fascinating historical buildings, the galleries and museums packed with masterpieces from artists whose work most of us know only from posters or calendars – and then the rich decadent food. And of course who could forget about the shopping? But there is a flip side to the City of Light.

Maybe I’m easy to please, but in France I’m fascinated and amazed by even the most mundane things. I enjoy browsing the flea markets – to me, old wooden baskets with advertising in French are quaint objects I would love to drag home, not pieces of junk. I find supermarkets endlessly enthralling as I trawl the aisles looking at cute little bottles of mustard and clever packets of exotic-looking washing powder. And then, there’s the cheap and entertaining pastime of people-watching – just watching the French being French.
