Growing up in a family with more creativity than money, Margaret’s parents embarrassed her by decorating their home with second-hand furniture and castoffs they lovingly painted, varnished and restored. Today, she thinks they were incredibly resourceful and talented and is happy to report that some of that resourcefulness spark has rubbed off on her. After a decade of editing home magazines such as Our House and Country Home Ideas, Margaret has seen tonnes of houses and when it comes to home decorating, she is keen to share what she thinks works and what doesn’t.

Roses Only

I’ve never really considered myself a person who loves roses. I’ve never grown them, I hate single, long-stem ones and there are even many fabric patterns with roses that leave me cold. Recently I stopped to think about it and decided that, like many of us, I might really be a closet rose lover. The clues were there all the time but I just didn’t put two and two together. My favourite all-time perfume is Tea Rose, I adore vintage-style fabrics splashed with blousy pink and red blossoms and I’ve even been eyeing a space in my backyard that might be the perfect spot to try planting a rosebush. So, it appears I might have joined the rose fan club by stealth.

Anthony Tesselaar recently sent us some great suggestions for choosing the right plants for your home and I’ve decided to go for the year-round elegance of pale-pink Flower Carpet roses. The reasons are many but include these: they’re only without leaves for a short spell in the colder months, they flower continually from early summer to winter and then drop their petals cleanly and their small glossy leaves are disease resistant.
