Timeless Appeal

Contemporary society is often accused of being obsessed with following trends, yet often, people shun this fixation when it comes to their houses. Rather than seek out the latest crazes in a bid to be cutting-edge cool, Peter and Gabriella Grippaudo chose a look of timeless, classic style.

WHEN STYLE MATTERS
When Peter and Gabriella decided to build a new house seven years ago, they chose to free themselves from the dictates of architectural and interiors fads. Th e couple explored design concepts from yesteryear that communicated an image of timeless refi nement – the result is a home that’s a snapshot of style as seen through their eyes. “The main idea behind it all is classic sophistication,” Gabriella says. “It’s liveable yet eye-catching.” From the sweeping marble and wrought-iron staircase to the grand marble columns and porcelain tiles, the house is an exercise in extravagance, but not to such an extent that it appears ostentatious or unwelcoming. To balance
these striking features, a host of engaging and inviting attributes – such as French doors and large wrap-around windows – have been incorporated.

“There are many panes of glass throughout the house, and plenty of open space,” Gabriella says. “This makes it seem brighter and contributes to the overall look of the house. The interplay between formal features and a relaxed environment creates the key dynamic of the home, and is representative of Gabriella and Peter’s search for a harmonious blend of comfort and splendour. To achieve this delicate equilibrium, it was vital the pair opt for a colour scheme that didn’t interfere or skew the scales one way or the other. To this end, a neutral palette of Dulux hues was chosen. “The use of soft creams achieves a timeless and peaceful mood,” she says.

ALL THINGS GREAT AND SMALL
Having laid the foundation for a sprawling and elegant home, Peter and Gabriella knew the job was only half done. Despite its decadence, it remained an empty nest until the couple set about sourcing furnishings to enhance its beauty. They committed themselves to the task and sourced pieces from all over Sydney, finding many items at Harvey Norman and La Forge at Leichhardt. The couple gave as much attention to the smaller pieces as they did the major ones. They feel that each and every accessory plays an important role in crafting a finely conceptualised look, and that the most whimsical decoration can effect the tone as dramatically as the biggest one. “The scatter cushions and wall-hangings alone create an amazing look, as does the ornate chandelier that hangs in the centre of the entry to give the home a stately feel,” Gabriella says. “There’s so much character and defi nition in each piece used – inside and out – and each one contributes to the complete image, finish and style of the home.”

The relationship between the furnishings and decorations remains consistent and strong between rooms, as a common theme binds them all the way through. Each space boasts peaceful and neutral undertones with rich accents for an arresting appeal. Gabriella and Peter’s efforts certainly don’t go unnoticed, and guests are as pleased with the results as they are. “The reactions of people visiting for the first time are mind blowing,” Gabriella says. “It’s not the sort of place you come across every day.”

A HOME FOR ALL
While a specific style dominates, the house was designed to cater to the needs of a large family and there are subtle changes of mood from one area to the next. “Each room is decorated with the aim of creating personal space for the person it accommodates,” Gabriella says. “Everyone has their own sanctuary – a place where they can get away and have a moment to themselves.” She views the master bedroom as a retreat, with an atmosphere similar to that of a suite in a prestigious hotel. “It could make anybody believe they’re away from the everyday stresses life brings,” she says with a smile. “It has a relaxing nature and is the perfect hideaway.”

The family often prefers to be together and to entertain, which is when the billiards and bar room comes into the spotlight. The convivial ambience generated by the earthy interiors makes it an ideal spot for everyone to kick up their heels, and a prime place for guests. “It’s a haven and perfect for social get-togethers,” Gabriella says. “It’s great for unwinding.”

Whether it’s entertaining family and friends, or providing a sanctuary from the outside world, the Grippaudo home is always the perfect place to luxuriate. “The house is so distinctively classic, modern furnishings would not have done it justice,” Gabriella says and Peter agrees. By taking their cues from the timeless estates of the past, the couple have crafted their own personal icon of style and love nothing more than to enjoy it each and every day.
