Toile Joy

It all began in France in the late 18th century, but today Toile de Jouy, a fabric with bucolic scenes, is often simply called toile. It’s still popular and very elegant and easy to find in a variety of patterns and colours on items as diverse as curtains to gumboots. Here are five of the best we’ve found.

1. Graceful yet cheerful, this Laura Ashley Toile wallpaper in Cerise is $69.95 for a 10-metre roll.

2. For a punch of colour, try a mix of plain and toile-patterned fabrics for dining chairs.

3. Splurge on the classic combination of red and white with red toile upholstery fabric teamed with a white-painted timber chair frame.

4. For stylish bedroom, try a toile-covered padded bed head, especially an elegant one in relaxing tones of taupe, black or grey.

5. Equally appealing on either a white bedpread or a linen-covered sofa, this Republic Toile cushion in duck-egg blue is $36.95 from Rapee.
