As I get older, I see the difference between passing fads and my particular sense of design more clearly. It feels great to be surrounded by my own style, but it’s also fun to add a little of the newest and coolest to the mix. Of course, my older, more sensible self now only invests in a trend if it’s going to be a cheap thrill!

Currently, it seems, one ongoing craze is for whimsical printed graphics – in particular nature, birds and little girls. I have to say I’m a bit of a sucker for these themes but haven’t invested much in them. Here are some great ways to keep you on trend, while making sure you stay within budget and in style.

KEEP IT BUDGET FRIENDLY
• Take an old frame and add a postcard that fits the style of the latest trend you admire.
• Buy a one-off piece especially for you, like a coffee mug or a cushion cover. Sometimes a little bit of the newest fad is all you need.
• Why buy something when you can draw or paint your own work of art? It will be original and of the moment.

KEEP IT DECORATIVE AND EASY TO CHANGE

• Utilise cheap but effective supports for your displays – such as old wooden clipboards. Bought second-hand, they
add a rustic touch and provide an excellent way to revamp and update your trendy items.
• Buy tea towels, cushion covers or aprons. These objects are simple to replace and don’t hurt the budget.
• Use removable stickers and stencils – they’re fun, cost-effective and can be altered easily. Try www.flatbird.com.au

KEEP IT SMALL BUT QUIRKY
• To be on trend or, better yet, ahead of it, try shopping at markets, art-gallery shops and creative online bazaars.
• If you over-invest in a fad, you’re in danger of making your decorating look overdone. Limit yourself to one or two items.
• Remember that fashions pass. If you only have a small number of trend-related items you can easily move on, either by donating them to a charity or selling them on eBay.
• Be creative and start your own fad.
