Hanging around
Wallpaper is incredibly popular at the moment, but most of us are a bit frightened of trying it at home. One of our favourite paint companies, Porter's Paints, has just released a beautiful range and the marketing manager, Lucy Sutherland, offers some valuable advice on choosing the right one for just the right place.
"When picking out wallpaper, it's important to remember that it's all down to personal choice," says Lucy. "Many people just fall in love with a particular pattern. At the end of the day, you have to live with it, so it has to be something you love."
Visiting a showroom is a must. "It's important to see wallpaper over a large area before you make up your mind," Lucy advises, "and with repeats and big patterns, you need to see more than one drop together."
If you're struggling to decide between traditional or modern, take a look at the new range of wallpaper from Porter's, which offers traditional design with a modern spin. Botanical themes in a range of colours are sought-after at the moment, with dramatic black and silver the most popular.
Consider the size of your wall in relation to the pattern. Some repeats are huge and you won't see the whole thing in a small area. "If you love a large-scale print but the space is limited, use a light or mid-tone on a single wall. This has the biggest impact without making the space seem small," says Lucy. "A large, dark print on more than one wall can make a small room look even more so.
