Country Kitchens - In Good Time continued...
It was important that the design blended in with the feel of the home. "With a colonial-style home, I didn't want bright colours or loads of stainless steel," Maria says, but it was the decorative aspects of it that attracted her. "I loved the ornate timberwork and interesting handles," she adds. The rest of the house has high ceilings, so she did the same in the kitchen. "It really makes it an open and airy work area," she reflects and a skylight in the ceiling contributes to this effect.
And Maria absolutely adores it. "When it was first installed I couldn't stop staring at it!" she exclaims. "I'd be in the backyard and glance in through the window, and I'd just stand and admire it." Although she still loves her it, she no longer gawks at it. Instead, she enjoys shopping for kitchen accessories and setting them up in what is now the hub of the home. "One of my favourite activities is looking for vintage things for it," she confesses. "I like to have a good collection in reserve, so I can rotate them and redecorate from time to time. It makes it feel like a new kitchen every few months."
Although it can often be a lengthy and arduous wait to get that dream kitchen, Maria has proved the old adage, 'good things come to those who wait'. And maybe she would add, 'and know exactly what they want'.
