Country Kitchens - A Dream Come True

Photography by Tony Potter
Styling by Greg Sukendro

Amanda had always wanted a kitchen like this. Years ago she found a photo of an English one that she fell in love with and then carried it around with her. So when she finally found a house that was big enough for it, naturally she just had to build it.

As this was the kitchen she had dreamt about for years, Amanda had plenty of time to plan it, which meant that she had no problem making it both beautiful and practical. She was determined to make the area just right for her, adding details like ensuring there was plenty of room for cutlery – as she had never had a kitchen that was big enough in that department. She also wanted lots of space around the island bench so that opening dishwashers and bumping into people wasn’t an issue. Finally, after what was a rather lengthy process and with a little outside help, she had everything she had ever wanted. She also had some of the furniture in the rest of the house designed to match its French-provincial style.

The original kitchen she renovated was 50 years old and comprised of two rooms. Turning it into one large one opening on to a courtyard meant there was more space – which was probably a good thing as there was always a toddler around. Even though Amanda admits she doesn’t like cooking much, she says that the new kitchen quickly became the family living area. It was also great for entertaining and she now claims that guests never seem to want to leave because it’s so nice – especially in summer as the combined kitchen and courtyard is the best place to be in hot weather.
