Country Kitchen - Modern Victorian

As Judy and Neil Hannan's home followed a Victorian theme, they saw no reason why the kitchen shouldn't do the same.
The Hannans began building the house in 1990 and, with the help of contractors, created the late-Victorian-style home with a rustic look they'd always dreamed of. Now, 18 years later, the whole family - Judy, Neil, Alicia, Lachlan and Morgan - are still very happy with it and Judy says "it's roomy enough for five people with busy lives, and a lot going on."
They designed the kitchen with the help of D & G Kitchens at Wilton, NSW. "It's a meeting place as much as an eating place," she explains, "and the style fits in with the rest of the house - late Victorian with some common country themes." She goes on to describe how the selection of timber wall lining and the panelled ceiling is consistent with those of the areas generally designated for cooking in the Victorian era, and it makes the room different from the others in the house which all have detailed plaster work.
It's open and airy, and this feel is accentuated by the colour scheme of yellow and white. "The subtle touch of a sunflower pattern on the curtains and the odd plate also helps make it light, but not gimmicky," she smiles. The Victorian theme is enhanced by Judy's must-have item, a old-style wood-burning stove from Furphy Foundry in Victoria, which comes complete with supplementary electric power. All the modern appliances are hidden behind cupboard doors, again in a bid to keep it looking authentic - after all, Queen Victoria didn't have a machine to wash the dishes.
