Isn't It Romantic!

Photography by Tony Potter

Interior designer Lynnie Eccleston loves the romance of French-country style with its handpainted furniture, mixture of florals and stripes, chandeliers and neat little topiaries. A Blue Mountains resident of 35 years' duration, Lynnie’s weatherboard cottage is surrounded by a neatly landscaped garden with a fountain, statuary and garden urns. It has two pretty bedrooms, a delightful bathroom and stunning conservatory, and as well, there's a kitchen/dining room and spacious living room and even a lattice-trimmed veranda for outdoor dining.

Although Lynnie prefers a soft and pretty look in her own home, she's just as happy working in traditional, contemporary and very modern styles if that's her client's preference. Most of the furniture and collectables came from her previous home. "I've always loved this effect," she declares, "and I've collected so many things in the style over the years." For flooring, she chose polished timber boards in the kitchen/dining area and the conservatory, with a pale pink carpet in the bedrooms and living room.

Laura Ashley striped pink and white wallpaper in the living room blends perfectly with vintage furniture handpainted finished in antique white, and a French settee and armchair covered in floral linen. Silk shades shield the light globes on the chandelier and wall brackets that came from Floodlight in Wollongong, while vintage plates and a number of small framed prints are grouped on the walls. At the other end of the living room there is another inviting sofa with a matching armchair and footstool covered in traditional Sanderson linen with plump scatter cushions.

In the open-plan kitchen/dining room the theme is blue and white, with check balloon curtains and Colefax & Fowler wallpaper in a French toile design. The glass-fronted kitchen cupboards are painted white with smart beech benchtops. "They're very well made and I think they're just terrific," Lynnie says, adding, "I'd recommend them to anyone." A white-painted dresser displays just some of Lynnie's collection of blue and white china, including Willow Pattern, Blue Delft and Calico designs, Cornish ware, Spode and Coalport.
