Isn't It Romantic! continued...
The conservatory opens off the kitchen and it's surrounded by windows and doors on all sides - and the blue and white theme is carried through there for continuity. Lynnie loves cooking and entertaining family and friends, so the dining table seats eight comfortably, with chairs in woven cane to give a light, summery feel. It was the builder who recommended against a glass ceiling in the conservatory because of the extreme climate in the mountains. "He said it would be too hot in summer and too cold in winter," she recalls, "so we went for the solid ceiling and we're glad we did, because it works beautifully."
Checks and florals give Lynnie's spacious bedroom a tranquil, romantic air and the walls are papered with dainty Laura Ashley designs above the dado rail and a gingham check below. A cane chair, a folding screen Lynnie lined with fabric embroidered with flowers and covered hatboxes make intriguing decorating touches. "The hatboxes are all in use," she laughs, "and there are about three hats in each as I just love to go to the races!"
There's even wallpaper above the tiles in the pretty bathroom - a charming floral again by Colefax & Fowler. The ceramic basin was handmade by Christine Bailey and Lynnie had the washstand custom-made to fit it. The skirt around it matches the balloon blinds and picks up the green in the wallpaper. By carefully blending old with new, treasured heirlooms with antique-store finds and modern reproductions, and coordinating it all with a romantic colour palette, Lynnie's captured the essence of French-country style and made it her own.
