Old-world charm

If you want to get away from it all and sink into the luxury and grandeur of a bygone era, you might want to try Varenna, a meticulously restored Edwardian residence in the Blue Mountains.
The purpose of a 'getaway' is to relax and forget your everyday life. And when staying in a lavishly appointed house that's decorated in keeping with its historic past, yet with all the modern comforts, you know you are off to a good start. Located only 250 metres from the heart of Leura, Varenna was built in the Federation 'Queen Anne' style around 1906 and was originally home to the granddaughter of Anglican Arch-Deacon William Cowper who came to the colony of Australia from England in 1809. Surrounded by 1800 square metres of beautiful garden and grounds, the house was lovingly restored by Lorraine and Roger Allanson, and you immediately notice their attention to detail in every room.
A fireplace in the dining/lounge area takes the chill off the air and the formal dining table can seat up to six people. There are three unique bedrooms, each with their own theme. The rich and sensual Scarlett room has a 'Gone with the Wind' inspiration with deep red walls and sheets trimmed with ivory lace. Then with crisp white bed linen and fluffy pillows, hues of blue with opulent touches of gold make up the regal Bluebell room. Lavish is the word often used to describe the French-inspired Mon Rouge bedroom with its rose-petal pink walls, crystal Swarovski chandelier and queen-size brass bed with pink satin and lace doona.
A fully equipped modern kitchen makes your stay complete, but to keep up appearances, an old wooden stove is included too. There are also three choices of where to enjoy whatever you manage to rustle up in the kitchen - a light and airy breakfast room, the formal dining room or an alfresco nook set under the 100-year-old apple tree.
