Country Yellows
Many of us love the notion of incorporating a dash of sunny, happy yellow in our homes, but the thought of it can be daunting. Colour consultant Samantha Bacon has some reassuring advice.
Warm and cheerful, yellow is undoubtedly one of the cheeriest colours of all. Associated with oriental philosophies and favoured by people who are innovative and intelligent, it's perfect for a country decorating scheme as it is reminiscent of fields of corn and sunflowers. Ochre is also a beautiful natural hue and can make a room feel relaxed and informal.
Many people decorate dull and uninspiring areas in white hoping for a fresh, clean look. Often though, white can end up just looking dirty and this is where pale yellow is so perfect to lift a dingy corner. And the good news is that pale yellow also harmonises with many other shades as long as the tonal levels are similar. It's also one of the easiest choices in colour combinations because, as long as it isn't too bright or deep, pale yellow is a good match for most of the spectrum.
However, once you choose brighter or deeper shades of yellow, it can be one of the trickiest colours for decorating interiors. Take care in very sunny rooms for instance, as stronger yellows can become too bright and unsettling. But as an accent hue, it's often easier to integrate bright yellows into a palette through soft furnishings and accessories rather than paint finishes. Pretty yellow curtains can liven up a simple white wall and give a room a country-style look, while delicate yellow cushions can lift a simple white sofa.
Warm yellows that contain more orange are mellow and easier to work with than cool yellows which contain green – that makes them citrus-y and bright.
