Flying Colours

continued...

The couple's long-time furniture-collecting habit has ensured that the house is full of unique antiques, such as the 'grandmother's chair' standing in a corner of the dining room, which Julia bought to sit in to nurse the children when they were small and read to them. Another piece of great sentimental value – as it was one of the first things she and Barry bought together – is a beautiful Victorian bookcase that takes pride of place in the dining room.

"I adore antiques – always have!" she exclaims. "Barry and I started collecting Victorian ones particularly in the '80s," she goes on. "However, we then discovered French furniture and found the classic lines just beautiful. We like the bones of a room to be simple and traditional, because it's comfortable and easy to live with and French pieces are perfect for creating that feel." Julia found many of her favourites at Classic Lines of Rose Bay in Sydney, which sources antiques in this style and restores them.

"As we've kept the furnishings fairly simple, we like to embellish the decor with cushions and colours," says Julia. A keen traveller, she collects bright cushions and other pieces throughout Asia and mixes them with French fabrics, including Provencal materials from Les Olivades in Sydney's Double Bay. "I find the Asian/French mix a real winner," she says. "In fact I, think the French word, 'meli-melo' which means 'eclectic' sums up my home perfectly. It's a blend of elements that work as a whole."
